VESTA by John Ford

English — A Better Suit for a Changing Body: Beautiful Tailoring, Not a Tighter Fit
By Miyuki Kitagawa, General Manager, VESTA by John Ford
“I choose a slim suit because I want to look a little more streamlined.”
It is an understandable instinct. But if you carry more weight around your waist, or have a broad chest and shoulders, a narrower suit is not necessarily the most flattering choice.
What matters is allowing the room your body needs while balancing the shoulders, chest and waist. The aim is to create a flattering outline around your body, rather than force it into a restrictive shape.
At VESTA by John Ford, our tailoring atelier in Ginza, Tokyo, we bring together pattern cutting, canvas construction and sewing to balance an elegant appearance with comfort.
“Does this mirror make me look slimmer?”
When clients try on their VESTA suits, we sometimes hear this question: “Is this a mirror that makes you look slimmer?”
Our mirrors have no special slimming effect. What has changed is the shape of the garment around the body.
The shoulder line, the shape through the chest, the curve towards the waist, and the relationship between jacket and trousers all contribute to the overall impression. When these elements work together, your reflection can look surprisingly different.
This is not achieved by squeezing the body. It comes from creating a flattering silhouette while preserving the ease you need. That is the difference clients notice in the mirror.
When the suits you used to wear no longer feel right
If you have noticed changes around your waist
“My old suit still fits across the shoulders, but it feels tight around my stomach.” “The front pulls when I fasten the button.”
Some men begin to notice these changes as they approach middle age. Continuing to buy the same size may no longer provide enough room. Simply going up a size, however, can leave the shoulders and sleeves too large.
The solution is to consider each area separately: shoulders that sit correctly, sufficient room around the abdomen, and proportions adjusted to the body you have today.
If you used to play sport regularly
You may have a strong chest, broad shoulders, a muscular back or substantial thighs. With fewer opportunities to exercise than before, you may also have gained some fullness around the waist.
A slim ready-to-wear suit can be difficult to fit to these different proportions. The shoulders and chest may feel restricted while other areas are loose. Trousers that fit at the waist may pull across the thighs.
Strong shoulders and a substantial chest can be attractive features. Tailoring should work with that shape, then balance it with the waist and legs, rather than compress it.
Does a tighter suit really make you look slimmer?
A suit does not become more flattering simply because it is narrower.
Insufficient room through the chest or abdomen can cause pulling around the buttons, lapels that lift away from the chest, or jacket fronts that flare awkwardly. These details can draw attention to the very area you hoped to make less noticeable.
Signs that your fit may need attention include:
- Strong pulling across the stomach when standing naturally with the jacket fastened.
- Tightness across the shoulders or chest when reaching forward.
- Pressure around the waist or thighs when seated.
- Excess room in the shoulders or sleeves after sizing up to fit the abdomen.
Creases and discomfort can reflect posture and the cut of the garment as well as size. The question is where to allow more room and where to refine the shape.
Three elements of a flattering silhouette without a restrictive waist
1. The pattern: balancing shoulders, chest and waist
A more defined waist does not require aggressively taking in the jacket.
We consider the shoulder outline, natural fullness through the chest and the line flowing towards the waist, along with jacket length, button position and the relationship with the trousers.
The amount of shoulder structure and chest ease varies from person to person. The goal is an individual balance, not a fixed “golden ratio” imposed on every body.
2. The canvas: supporting the shape from within
Canvas is the internal layer that helps support a tailored jacket’s shape.
At VESTA, we use Italian-made horsehair canvas selected to suit the cloth. This unseen material contributes to the shaping of the chest and the natural roll of the lapel.
Canvas alone does not make every suit flattering. The pattern, handling of the canvas and sewing must work together to achieve the intended silhouette.
3. The sewing: turning the design into a garment
Good patterns and materials need skilled hands to bring them to life.
VESTA values hand sewing in our Ginza atelier. We consider the curves around the body and the connections between different parts of the garment to refine both its appearance and how it feels to wear.
The pattern provides the design, the canvas supplies internal support, and the sewing brings them together. Treating these as inseparable elements is fundamental to our approach.

Ease is an essential part of elegance
Room to move is not the same as excess fabric.
A well-balanced suit should present a clean outline when you stand, allow you to extend your arm for a handshake, and let you sit comfortably and concentrate on the conversation. That requires carefully placed ease within the garment.
You do not need to endure restrictive clothing because you are concerned about your shape.
On days when you wear a tie for work, attend an important meeting or join a reception, we want you to feel comfortable and composed. A flattering outline and sufficient ease together create a natural sense of confidence.
Three fabrics to complement beautifully shaped tailoring
A successful silhouette brings together the pattern, sewing and character of the cloth. Here are two different striped fabrics and one understated charcoal grey. Choose for your proportions and the occasions you attend, rather than relying on a pattern alone to make you look slimmer.
1. SCABAL SUPER 100’s — Navy Shadow and Multi-Stripe

This 100% wool cloth has a degree of body and combines subtle shadow stripes with fine multi-stripes that emerge as the light changes.
Its structure lends itself to shaping a natural chest and a flowing line towards the waist. It is a fitting choice for making the most of strong shoulders and a substantial chest while allowing the abdomen the room it needs.
A double-breasted design with peak lapels can create a confident presence at meetings, speaking engagements and business dinners. The emphasis is on balancing the chest, shoulders and waist, not tightening the jacket around the body.

2. DORMEUIL AMADEUS 365 — Navy Shadow Stripe

Made in England, Amadeus 365 combines a beautiful lustre with a lighter feel. Its woven navy shadow stripes add understated distinction.
We recommend it for those who want more character than a plain cloth without an overt pattern. The subtle sheen complements the sculpted line from chest to waist.
It is a considered choice for important business meetings, dinners and receptions where a suit is appropriate. Choose it to enjoy dressing for the occasion, rather than simply to conceal your shape.

3. VITALE BARBERIS CANONICO Super 120’s — Charcoal Grey

This tropical wool combines lightness, breathability and a refined sheen. Its understated charcoal grey allows the tailored silhouette to take centre stage.
With less emphasis on colour or pattern, attention falls on the balance of shoulders, chest and waist. It pairs easily with white or pale blue shirts and is a versatile option for business and meetings.
As a tropical cloth, it is best selected with the season and indoor environment in mind, particularly when a lighter feel is a priority. We can discuss the shoulder construction and other details to suit your build and preferences.

A suit for the person you are today, at VESTA in Ginza
“I will have a suit made once I have lost a little weight.”
You may have had that thought. But a suit that flatters you as you are today is also worth considering.
The presence that comes with age and the strength developed through sport are part of your character. At VESTA, we discuss both your fit concerns and the occasions for which you dress, from work and business dinners to ceremonies.
Please tell us openly what you need: more comfort around the waist, less restriction in the shoulders, or a cleaner silhouette.
Our aim is to help you leave for work or a meeting feeling confident, in a suit that looks beautiful and feels comfortable.

Frequently asked questions about suits and body shape
Should men with a fuller waist avoid slim-fit suits?
The label “slim fit” is not enough to judge a suit. What matters is sufficient room around the abdomen and the right relationship with the shoulders, chest and jacket length. Strong pulling or pressure suggests that the size or cut needs reviewing.
Will a tailored suit always make me look slimmer?
The key is to create appropriate ease and a flattering three-dimensional shape, rather than a tight fit.
VESTA’s patterns are created by a maestro whose work spans luxury maisons and accomplished factory brands. They are designed to combine comfort with sculptural shaping that flatters the male physique.
Using these patterns as a foundation, we adjust the balance of shoulders, chest and waist to each individual, then bring the shape to life through canvas construction and skilled sewing. We aim for a clean, defined silhouette while retaining the room you need around the abdomen. Results vary with each person, but the goal is to enhance your natural proportions without asking you to tolerate a restrictive fit.
Can you accommodate broad shoulders and a substantial chest?
Yes. We assess the relationship between your shoulders, chest and waist, allowing each area the ease it needs. If choosing a ready-to-wear size to fit one part of your body leaves other areas ill-fitting, we welcome the opportunity to advise you.
Will a suit with more room look untidy?
Necessary ease and excess fabric are different things. By refining shoulder position, sleeve length, jacket length and the line through the body, we can work towards a neat appearance with room to move.
Can I order while my body shape is still changing?
Please discuss your plans with us first. If you anticipate a substantial further change, we can consider the timing of measurements and your order together. There are limits to alterations after a garment has been made, so advance discussion is helpful.
