VESTA by John Ford

English — Suits for Muscular Men: Room Through the Shoulders and Chest, Shape Through the Waist
The Art of Dressing Well|VESTA by John Ford
By Miyuki Kitagawa, General Manager, VESTA by John Ford
For men with a muscular build, choosing a suit means allowing the shoulders and chest the room they need while maintaining a balanced waistline. Measurements are only part of the answer. Equally important are a pattern that accommodates the depth of the chest and the curve of the shoulders, and the tailoring skills that turn that pattern into a three-dimensional garment.
A trained physique deserves to be dressed with both comfort and elegance.
At VESTA in Ginza, we bring together patterns supervised by an Italian maestro, hand cutting and hand sewing by Japanese craftspeople, and carefully selected cloth and interlinings to make the most of each client’s individual physique.
Does your suit struggle to fit the body you have trained?
Some men train regularly and take great care of their bodies. Others have spent years playing sport, developing strong shoulders, a substantial chest and powerful legs. At VESTA, we often help clients with these backgrounds find a suit that feels right.
We hear concerns such as:
“When the shoulders and chest fit, the waist looks baggy.”
“When I choose a size for my waist, the jacket is so tight that I can hardly reach forward.”
“The trouser waist fits, but the seat and thighs are too tight.”
You have worked on your physique, yet its shape seems to disappear beneath a suit. Or, when you try to show that shape, the clothes feel restrictive.
The question to ask is whether the shape of the garment accommodates the three-dimensional form of your body.
Connecting a strong chest and shoulders to a defined waist
A muscular physique may have a pronounced difference between chest and waist measurements, as well as greater volume through the shoulders, back and upper arms.
Going up a ready-to-wear size may provide enough room through the chest while also adding unwanted fullness to the waist and sleeves. Choosing a size for a slim waist can leave too little space for the chest, shoulders and arms.
At VESTA, we consider the characteristics of each area and how they work together within the whole suit.
| Area of concern | What we consider in the tailoring |
|---|---|
| A substantial chest and broad back | Three-dimensional shape to accommodate depth at the front and back, with room for movement |
| Developed shoulders and upper arms | Shoulder slope, armhole shape, sleeve width and sleeve pitch |
| A defined waist | A natural transition from chest to waist, with enough ease when seated |
| A muscular seat and thighs | Rise, crotch shape, thigh width and pleat allowance |
| Developed calves | The line from knee to hem and whether the trousers settle back after walking |
The aim is a silhouette that expresses the strength of the shoulders and chest, then flows smoothly towards the waist. By balancing these transitions, we can emphasise the body’s proportions without tightly compressing the torso.
Why measurements alone cannot explain comfort
Shoulder width, chest and waist measurements matter. Yet two people with the same measurements can have very different shapes.
One may carry more volume at the front of the chest; another may have a more developed back. Shoulder slope, the position of the arms and everyday posture also affect the shape a garment needs.
A jacket with insufficient shaping may pull across a deep chest or allow the lapels to lift away from it. Even when there is enough sleeve width, a mismatch between shoulder and sleeve can make reaching forward uncomfortable.
Tailoring requires both measuring the body and designing a garment that allows that body to sit comfortably within it.
The maestro’s pattern: shaping the male silhouette
VESTA’s patterns are supervised by the Italian maestro Lodovico Zandegu, who appeared at VESTA’s talk as president of IACDE’s Italian chapter and international organisation. His technical work spans leading luxury houses and respected manufacturers with their own brands.
His patterns place equal importance on a flattering three-dimensional silhouette and a light, comfortable feel.
Working from that design, VESTA adjusts for each client’s shoulder and chest depth, the difference between chest and waist, and posture. We retain the presence of the chest while developing a natural line towards the waist, checking both appearance and ease of movement.

From flat cloth to a shaped garment: hand cutting, easing and ironwork
A beautiful pattern needs skilled construction to bring it to life.
At VESTA, our cutter checks the condition and grain of the cloth before cutting it by hand. This involves reading the curves from shoulder to chest and chest to waist, while anticipating how each piece will look once sewn together.
Accurate cutting, sewing and successive stages of ironwork work together to create the rounded shape that surrounds the body.
Easing creates controlled fullness
Easing is a technique for distributing a difference in length between pieces of cloth as they are joined, creating fullness without obvious gathers.
It can be used to introduce the necessary roundness into a sleeve head, for example. The skill lies in placing the right amount of fullness in the right area, rather than simply leaving excess fabric. This is where a craftsperson’s experience becomes apparent.
Shaping with the iron
Another important technique is shaping the cloth through controlled stretching or shrinking, using heat, steam and skilled handling.
Ironwork takes place during construction, as well as at the final stage of removing creases. It helps transform flat cloth into curves that follow the body.
Fullness through the chest, roundness over the shoulder and a smooth transition into the sleeve emerge from the combined work of pattern making, cutting, sewing and pressing.
A muscular body needs space to accommodate its volume. Tailoring gives that space a beautiful, deliberate form.
Genuine horsehair canvas: supporting the chest from within
The materials inside a jacket influence its construction just as the outer cloth does.
VESTA uses fine Italian interlinings, including genuine horsehair canvas from Bertero, selecting the construction to suit the cloth and the intended result.
Canvas forms an internal foundation for the chest’s shape and the natural roll of the lapel. It helps us accommodate a substantial chest while encouraging the outer cloth to fall elegantly.
Fine canvas alone, however, does not determine comfort. The way it is shaped to the pattern, sewn and worked together with the outer cloth is equally important.
The pattern defines the shape, the materials support it, and skilled hands bring it to life.
This combination is fundamental to VESTA’s tailoring.

From looking good on a hanger to feeling right in motion
Many suits look neat on a hanger. Whether a particular suit works for you becomes clearer when you put it on and move.
Do more than stand in front of a mirror. Reach forward as if offering a handshake. Sit down. Walk a little. Try the movements you make during a working day or a social engagement.
- Does reaching forward cause strong pulling through the shoulders, back or upper arms?
- When standing naturally, is there pronounced pulling across the chest or around the fastening?
- When seated, do you feel pressure around the waist or thighs?
- After moving, does the jacket or trouser fabric remain caught in an awkward position?
Ready-to-wear or made-to-order, and price alone, cannot tell you everything about a suit’s quality. Consider whether the pattern suits your body, how the internal structure and construction create its shape, and how it feels when worn in motion.
Our aim is a garment that offers beauty and comfort not only when it is first completed, but also when you return to it time after time.
Muscular legs need thoughtful trouser shaping, too
Even with a well-fitting jacket, restrictive trousers can make the day uncomfortable.
Muscle development varies with sport, training, playing position and the individual. During a consultation, we might pay particular attention to the seat of someone with a baseball background, the thighs of a footballer or cyclist, or the calves of a runner.
We do not assign a pattern simply according to a sport. We assess the body as it is today and consider how it moves when standing, sitting and walking.
Turning room through the seat and thighs into a clean line
For developed thighs, width is only part of the picture. The rise, crotch shape and relationship to the seat also matter.
Adding more pleats is not automatically the solution. We balance their depth and direction with the shaping at the waist and the line from knee to hem.
By providing the space needed through the seat and thighs while refining the fall towards the hem, we aim for trousers that combine ease with elegance.
A V-shaped waistband notch and cupro knee lining
VESTA also values the traditional trouser detail of a V-shaped notch at the centre back of the waistband. It allows a little room for the back of the waistband to open and accommodate movement. Combined with appropriate shaping through the seat and crotch, it contributes to comfort around the waist.
The cupro lining inside the trousers, extending towards the knees, is another important material that helps the fabric glide against the skin. Cupro is a regenerated cellulose fibre derived entirely from cotton, known for its smooth feel and ability to absorb and release moisture.
Once adequate room has been provided through the thighs, attention to these interior materials adds another element of comfort.
Three Suits We Recommend for Your Trained Physique
Colour, pattern and lustre add another dimension to tailoring that fits your body. Here are Miyuki’s three recommendations for expressing the physique you have developed.
1. Loro Piana ZELANDER® — Charcoal Grey Double-Breasted Suit

For a classical wardrobe, charcoal grey is a choice Miyuki particularly recommends today. Its composed colour brings definition to trained shoulders and a substantial chest, creating a sharp, masculine impression.
ZELANDER® by Loro Piana is a pure-wool cloth with a natural texture and balanced body. In a double-breasted suit, the peak lapels and shaped chest create presence, while the line towards the waist expresses the silhouette elegantly. It is a compelling choice for men who want their strength to read as refined, confident style.

2. Zegna LOOP — Navy Chalk Stripe

For a substantial build, generously spaced chalk stripes can work beautifully. Their scale balances the volume of the shoulders and chest, while the vertical lines give the silhouette a clean, elongated impression.
This lightly brushed, pure-wool LOOP flannel features tasteful blue chalk stripes against navy. As the stripes follow the tailoring from the chest towards the waist, they can make the change in proportion more apparent. The key is to preserve comfortable ease and a clean line, rather than pull the garment so tightly that the pattern distorts.

3. Zegna Traveller with Silk — Navy Herringbone

To enjoy the shape of a trained physique through the play of light, consider this navy herringbone with 10% silk. Its clear, delicate lustre catches the light subtly as you move.
Light falls softly across the fullness of the chest and shoulders, while shadows follow the curves towards the waist. This interplay can bring out the contrast between a substantial upper body and a defined waist. The effect is a luminous sheen, not a sheer or see-through fabric. It is an elegant choice for dinners and receptions, where the suit’s appearance in motion becomes part of its appeal.

Frequently asked questions about suits for muscular men
Should I choose stretch fabric if I have a muscular build?
Stretch can be an option, but the starting point is sufficient room through the shoulders, chest, upper arms, seat and thighs. We fit the body through the pattern and three-dimensional construction, then recommend a cloth that suits your needs and preferences, rather than relying on stretch alone.
Can I buy a larger size for my chest and simply have the waist taken in?
Alterations can help in some cases. However, shoulder width, armholes, jacket length and pocket position are also involved. Substantially reducing only the waist can disturb the overall balance. If the difference between your chest and waist is pronounced, consider having the garment designed for those proportions from the outset.
Can a suit define my waist while still allowing comfortable movement?
At VESTA, we retain the shape of the chest and develop a natural line towards the waist, while preserving the ease your body needs. We check everyday movements, such as reaching and sitting, to work towards both a flattering silhouette and comfort.
Can I order a suit if my body is likely to change with training?
Please tell us about any planned bulking or cutting phases, as well as when you need the suit. We can discuss suitable timing for measurements and ordering in light of the changes you expect. Alterations after completion have limits, so sharing your plans beforehand helps us offer more specific advice.
Can you also make trousers for developed thighs and a muscular seat?
Yes. We assess the waist, seat, thighs and calves, then consider pleats, rise and the line towards the hem. We welcome clients whose upper and lower bodies have different fitting requirements.
Enjoy the physique you have built, in a suit
Training is an investment of time and care in yourself. We believe your suit should allow that effort to show naturally.
At VESTA, clients who play sport or train regularly sometimes tell us how much they appreciate both the comfort and the way their suit presents their physique.
We aim to express that strength with the refinement appropriate to work, dinners and formal occasions.
A suit that presents your trained physique beautifully, without feeling restrictive: that is what VESTA strives to create.
Tell us what you experience in your everyday clothes: “The chest fits, but the waist is loose,” “My shoulders feel tight when I reach forward,” or “Trousers that fit my thighs are too big at the waist.”
If you have yet to wear VESTA, we invite you to visit us in Ginza and experience the appearance and comfort of three-dimensional tailoring. Together, we can consider a suit for work or social occasions, shaped for the body you have today.
