A Life Well Madeの「手書きの時間を取り戻す。」

What Makes a Good Suit? Discover VESTA’s Tailoring Through Movement

A good suit combines an elegant standing silhouette with comfort through everyday movements. At VESTA by John Ford in Ginza, we consider your body and the occasions you dress for when balancing shape and ease. Sitting, writing and standing up offer practical ways to experience the value of tailoring.

Choose through cloth, shape, ease and construction

Beautiful cloth is a pleasure to choose. To turn that material into a comfortable garment requires a three-dimensional shape around the shoulders, chest and back, together with appropriate ease. At VESTA, your posture and daily routine matter alongside your preferred silhouette.

VESTA’s approach: Italian patterns and materials, Japanese handwork

VESTA brings together patterns supervised by an Italian menswear maestro, hand sewing by Japanese craftspeople and tailoring materials from Italy. We consider the internal canvas, sewing and shoulder construction alongside the outer cloth, aiming for a shape that sits naturally around the body.

The value of handwork should be experienced when you wear the suit. Consider its appearance in the mirror and how it feels as you move.

Comfort our customers notice in everyday movement

Sitting, writing and rising are three movements in which many VESTA customers tell us they particularly notice the difference in comfort. Some arrive with an impression of suits as stiff or restrictive, then tell us that wearing VESTA has completely changed that perception. Ease in everyday movement is central to what we consider a good suit.

Traditional Italian methods, carefully realised by Japanese hands

Our approach draws on traditional Italian tailoring, carefully realised by Japanese craftspeople in a three-dimensional structure. VESTA values time-consuming processes that can be simplified in production focused on efficiency.

One example is easing: carefully distributing a small amount of extra cloth to create curvature without visible gathers. Used around areas such as shoulders and sleeves, it works alongside shaped sewing and the setting of the internal canvas to build a garment around the body. Our aim is appropriate freedom within a considered shape, bringing together elegance and comfort in movement.

Comfort inside the trousers: waistband lining and pocketing

The comfort around the trouser waist is another detail our customers frequently praise. VESTA develops and makes its own waistband lining using Italian shirting fine enough to make a luxury shirt. We give the pocketing the same attention to materials and finishing. These hidden parts matter when the waistband rests against the body or a hand slips into a pocket: quality should be experienced throughout the garment.

1. Sit down: consider the waist, seat and thighs

For a meeting or dinner, you may spend more time sitting than standing. Unfasten a single-breasted jacket and sit in your usual posture. Notice any uncomfortable pressure around the waist or thighs and how the trousers feel around the seat. Ease depends on the combination of measurements and shape, as well as details such as pleats.

2. Write: feel how the shoulders, back and sleeves move

Write a few sentences at a desk. Does the jacket pull excessively across the shoulders or back? Do the cuffs interfere with your hands? Fabric naturally creases when your arms move. Consider both freedom of movement and how the jacket settles when you lower your arms.

3. Rise: bend to tie your shoes, then return upright with ease

Bending to tie a shoelace, then returning upright, offers another way to experience the tailoring. Customers tell us they appreciate being able to do this without distracting pulling across the jacket back or around the trousers, and describe a light, easy feeling as they rise.

At a fitting, unfasten a single-breasted jacket and try the movement within a comfortable range. Notice the back, waist and thighs, and how the jacket and trousers settle when you return upright.

Show us any movement that causes discomfort so that we can discuss shape and ease in relation to the way you wear your suit.

Tell us about the occasions you dress for

Long meetings, frequent travel and evening dinners can bring different priorities. Wearing the shirt and shoes you intend to use makes a fitting more relevant. At VESTA, your body, preferences and routine help guide our discussion of cloth, shape and ease.

Choose through beauty and the experience of use

A Life Well Made’s “Making Time to Write” explores choosing a beautiful tool by trying it and considering how it feels in use. Being drawn to a material, then discovering whether it suits your day, is an approach that also applies to clothing.

Frequently asked questions

How should I assess a good suit?

Consider its cloth and standing silhouette, then try everyday movements such as sitting, writing and standing up. Look for a balance between shape and the ease you need.

Do creases during movement mean a suit does not fit?

Movement naturally creates creases. Also consider uncomfortable pulling or pressure and how the jacket settles when your arms return to rest.

What should I tell VESTA at a consultation?

Tell us about your occasions, usual style, preferred silhouette and any concerns about comfort. Demonstrating specific movements can help clarify those concerns.
