When Imagination Becomes Legacy
A visit to Teatro Olimpico, Vicenza
By Miyuki Kitagawa | A Life Well Made

Beyond the great arch of the stage, a street seems to lead into another world. The photograph I took at Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza captures something of that illusion: architecture drawing the eye towards a distance that feels much greater than the space before it.
What inspired me was more than the beauty of a historic theatre. It was the encounter with an imagination that still has the power to move us, more than four centuries after it took physical form.
A vision carried forward
Andrea Palladio designed the theatre in 1580, drawing on the architecture of ancient Roman theatres. He died before seeing it realised; his son Silla oversaw its execution. For the inaugural performance of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex in 1585, Vincenzo Scamozzi created the celebrated perspective scenery depicting the seven streets of Thebes.
One of the theatre’s most remarkable achievements is its ability to suggest a depth far greater than the space it occupies. The “seven streets of Thebes” behind the stage are wooden scenery extending into a depth of around twelve metres. By applying perspective to three-dimensional architectural scenery, Scamozzi created streets that appear to recede far into the distance when viewed from the audience. The dimensions of a space and the expansiveness we experience need not be the same. This meeting of architecture, stage design and an understanding of visual perception reveals the Renaissance capacity to give imagination physical form. These wooden streets were made for a performance. Their effect was so successful that they became a permanent part of the theatre. What began as a setting for a story became a legacy of its own.
Imagination, given form
There is something deeply stimulating about seeing an idea surviveits makers and continue to spark ideas in others. Here, imagination meets art through an understanding of space, proportion and the craft of making. The result still invites us to look, wonder and imagine.
My visit reminded me that creating something lasting begins with a willingness to see beyond what is immediately in front of us—and with the skill and care to give that vision form.
That encounter also brought to mind the respect for proportion and the care of the maker’s hands that guide our work at VESTA.

A Life Well Made
