ジャケットの前には三つのボタン。けれど、着た姿は二つボタンのように見える。「三つボタン段返り」は、そんな控えめな工夫を持つ仕立てです。英語では「three-roll-two」または「3-roll-2」。ラペルと呼ばれる下襟が中央のボタン付近まで自然に返り、一番上のボタンがその内側に隠れます。
目立つ装飾を足さずに、胸元に柔らかな表情をつくる。知ってから眺めると、見慣れたジャケットの輪郭が少し違って見えてきます。
留めるのは、基本的に中央だけ
段返りの上のボタンは、留めるための主役ではありません。立って前を閉じるときは、基本的に中央のボタンだけを留め、上下は外します。座るときには中央も外すと、身頃に無理がかかりにくくなります。
通常の三つボタンジャケットとは分けて考え、上のボタンを無理に留めたり、ラペルを平らに押さえたりせず、その一着に備わる自然な返りを楽しみましょう。
見るべきは、ラペルの曲線
選ぶときには、鏡の前で胸元を見てください。ラペルは滑らかに返っているか。中央のボタンを留めたとき、襟や身頃に不自然な引きつれがないか。隠れるボタンホールは、返った状態でどのように見えるか。

A three-roll-two jacket has three front buttons, yet often looks like a two-button jacket when worn. Its lapel rolls naturally towards the middle button, leaving the top button tucked beneath the fold. This quiet detail gives the chest a softer expression without adding decoration.
Fasten the middle button
When standing with the jacket closed, fasten the middle button and leave the top and bottom open. Unbutton the jacket when sitting to avoid pulling the front. Unlike a conventional three-button jacket, the top button on a three-roll-two is not intended to be fastened. Let the lapel follow its natural roll rather than forcing it flat.
Follow the curve
In front of a mirror, look for a smooth lapel roll and a front that sits comfortably when buttoned. Notice how the upper buttonhole appears within the fold. Cloth, internal construction and finishing all influence the result, so the name of the style tells only part of the story. Try the jacket on and judge how it settles on you.
