What I Felt in Italy: The Return of the Tuxedo — and Why the Economy and the Way We Dress May Be More Connected Than We Think

In September 2026, I traveled to Italy for business.

As I moved through Milan, Vicenza, Biella, and Rome, two things stood out to me very strongly.

The first was a sense that Italy felt brighter and more confident than before.

The second was the unexpectedly strong presence of tuxedos and formalwear.

At first glance, these may seem like two completely separate observations.

But perhaps they are more connected than we think.

Italy Becomes the World’s Fourth-Largest Exporter

In Japan, Italy is still sometimes viewed as a Southern European country that has struggled with long-term economic stagnation.

But today’s numbers tell a rather different story.

In the third quarter of 2025, Italy surpassed Japan in export value to become the world’s fourth-largest exporting country, ranking second in Europe after Germany.

In the first half of 2026, Italian exports also increased by 4.5% year on year.

And this is not just about fashion and food.

Italian companies — particularly small and medium-sized businesses with highly specialized expertise — are exporting machinery, pharmaceuticals, food products, materials, and many other goods to markets around the world.

During this trip, I felt something beyond what the figures alone can explain.

There was energy in the streets.

People seemed brighter.

Stores felt lively.

And above all, I often sensed a certain confidence in their country, their work, and their future.

Of course, this is my personal impression from being there.

But it reminded me that the word “economy” is also very much about people’s mood and sense of optimism.

Italians Never Stop Enjoying Life

Italy has always had a strong culture of enjoying everyday life.

Eating well.
Meeting people.
Talking.
And dressing well.

There is joy in those rituals themselves.

Does a stronger economy make people want to dress better?

Or does the desire to enjoy life and present oneself well help create energy in society?

Perhaps there is no simple answer.

But walking through Italy this time, I found myself thinking:

Maybe we could all allow ourselves to enjoy life a little more.

Clothing is part of that too.

We do not have to dress only because it is practical.

We do not have to choose clothes only because we need them.

Sometimes, simply thinking,

“Today, I want to look a little better when I go out.”

can lift our mood.

What Surprised Me Most: The Scale of the Tuxedo Sections

As someone who has worked with menswear for many years, one of the most interesting things I noticed was the strong presence of tuxedos.

In the boutiques I visited, tuxedos were not simply tucked into a corner as a niche category.

Entire sections were clearly devoted to formalwear.

Black and midnight-blue shawl-collar tuxedos stood alongside green double-breasted styles and peak-lapel models.

The sheer volume was striking.

This surprised me because, in recent years, Italian wedding attire for grooms had generally become more understated.

Navy and dark suits became common choices, and, just as in Japan, menswear overall has continued to move in a more casual direction.

With hotter summers and changing lifestyles, everyday clothing has become lighter, softer, and more relaxed.

That is precisely why it was so interesting to see the opposite movement emerging at the same time:

When the occasion calls for it, people seem increasingly willing to dress properly — and to enjoy doing so.

Beyond Casualization: The Pleasure of Dressing Formally

Perhaps this is not simply a fashion trend.

A wedding is not only about the bride and groom.

It is also a moment when family and friends come together to celebrate an important milestone in someone’s life.

There has always been a protocol behind dressing for such occasions:

To dress in a way that shows respect for the event.

Of course, today we no longer need to follow every traditional rule as strictly as people once did.

But that does not mean that everything is equally appropriate.

A man puts on a tuxedo.

A woman chooses a dress.

Shoes are polished.

A bow tie or necktie is carefully selected.

The very act of preparing oneself creates a feeling that:

“Today is a special day.”

Seeing so many tuxedos displayed in Italy reminded me of this deeper role that clothing can play.

“When It Matters, Dress Properly”

I do not think menswear will return to a time when men wear suits every single day.

The way we work has changed.

Summers are hotter.

Polo shirts, knitwear, and lightweight jackets are now indispensable parts of modern business wardrobes.

But perhaps, as a result, the opposite idea is becoming more meaningful:

On special occasions, enjoy formalwear fully.

You may not need to wear a tie every day.

But for a wedding, wear a tuxedo.

For an important dinner, put on a jacket.

For a major milestone in life, have something made especially for the occasion.

That sense of contrast feels very Italian to me.

Clothing Is Also a Way to Enjoy Life

What I brought back from this trip was not only information about fabrics or trends.

When an economy begins to show signs of strength, people’s expressions can change.

When people feel more optimistic, the city itself becomes more energetic.

And then perhaps people begin to think:

Let’s eat something a little better.
Let’s go out and meet people.
Let’s dress up a little.

Fashion has often been described as a mirror of society.

The return of tuxedos that I noticed in Italy may not be simply a fashion trend.

It may also reflect a deeper desire:

To enjoy life’s special moments by dressing properly for them.

Perhaps the more casual everyday life becomes, the more meaningful formalwear becomes.

And perhaps this is something we may begin to see more of in Japan as well.

That was one of the thoughts I brought home with me from Italy.

At VESTA, too, I would like us to continue proposing clothing that is not simply something you “have to wear,” but something that makes life a little more enjoyable when you put it on.

For a Special Day, Choose a Garment Made for You

Precisely because everyday life has become more casual, there is more value than ever in dressing properly for life’s important moments — weddings, anniversary dinners, ceremonies, and formal parties.

A tuxedo is not something you wear every day.

And that is exactly why choosing one should also be part of the enjoyment.

At VESTA, we create tuxedos, morning coats, frock coats, and other formalwear not only according to your body shape and personal preferences, but also with careful consideration of where you will wear it, the time of day, the level of formality of the occasion, and how you may wish to wear it again in the future.

For your own wedding.

For the wedding or ceremony of someone important to you.

For an anniversary dinner.

For a black-tie event.

Even if your first question is simply,

“I’m not sure what I should wear,”

we would be happy to advise you.

Not formalwear you wear because you have to.
A garment that makes you look forward to the day itself.

Why not have your own formalwear made at VESTA in Ginza?
