Understanding why clothes are made and worn a certain way makes the experience of commissioning them all the more rewarding. The Art of Dressing Well is a series by Miyuki Kitagawa of VESTA by John Ford in Ginza, exploring the “why” behind menswear through more than 25 years of experience working with clients and fitting tailored garments.
In this edition, we turn to the fit of a coat. Why should measurements be taken over a suit? How do you decide on sleeve and coat length? We explore three key considerations—shoulders, sleeves and overall length—that bring elegance and comfort together.
Why Should You Be Measured for a Bespoke Coat Over a Suit? Three Keys to the Right Fit: Shoulders, Sleeves and Length
When ordering a bespoke coat, we recommend being measured while wearing the suit or jacket you would normally wear underneath. This allows us to assess the room needed through the shoulders and chest, the sleeve length and the overall proportions, taking your layers into account.
A coat is much more than an enlarged jacket. It needs to maintain a beautiful line from shoulder to hem, allow comfortable movement and keep you warm—even over several layers. Achieving this requires a design that reflects how you actually dress.
Here, we introduce the three key considerations behind VESTA’s coat fittings, along with the choices that help create a coat you will love wearing.
1. Shoulders and Chest | Comfortable Layers, a Clean Silhouette
A tailored jacket contains more than its outer fabric: canvas, lining and other structural elements contribute to its shape and volume. Wearing a coat over it requires a different amount of ease than wearing one over a shirt alone.
If you have commissioned a coat at VESTA before, you will recognise our approach: we always take your coat measurements with a jacket underneath.
We check that the chest does not pull when the coat is buttoned, that the jacket’s shoulders are not compressed inside, and that reaching forward does not create excessive tension across the shoulders or back.
More room is not always better, however. Too much volume can make even a beautifully designed coat look heavy.
The aim is to accommodate the jacket comfortably while maintaining a clean, elegant outline. This balance is central to a well-tailored coat.
If you regularly wear thick knitwear, please let us know. The ease you need will depend on how you intend to wear your coat—for commuting, evening engagements or relaxed weekends.
2. Sleeve Length | Covering the Suit and Shirt, Down to the Base of the Thumb
Jackets and coats call for different approaches to sleeve length.
A jacket typically reveals a little shirt cuff; a coat should cover both. At VESTA, our guideline is for the sleeves to fully cover the suit and shirt sleeves and reach approximately to the base of the thumb, with your arms resting naturally at your sides.
Sleeves that are too short can expose both the layers underneath and your wrists to the cold. Sleeves that are too long can look cumbersome and interfere with movement.
During the fitting, we check the sleeves both at rest and as you bend or extend your arms. We also account for differences in arm length and shoulder slope, adjusting the fit to the individual.
The hands and cuffs attract more attention than you might expect. The right sleeve length contributes to both warmth and a polished appearance.
3. Coat Length | Covering the Jacket and Balancing the Whole Outfit
For a coat worn over a suit, the first consideration is that it fully covers the jacket’s hem. From there, we determine the length according to your height, build, lifestyle and preferred silhouette.
Do you favour a lighter, more relaxed look, or a classic, composed presence? Do you spend much of your day walking, or travel mainly by car? The ideal coat length reflects the way you live.
An above-the-knee length can feel light and easy to wear, while a coat reaching to the knee or below can convey a more flowing elegance. Yet the same length can look quite different depending on the shoulder width, the volume through the body and the flare of the hem.
Rather than choosing a length by numbers alone, consider the line from shoulder to hem and the balance of the complete outfit, including trousers and shoes. This is a valuable guide to choosing a coat you will enjoy for years.
Bring Your Favourite Coat Details Together in a Design That Suits You
Beyond achieving the right fit, one of the pleasures of commissioning a coat at VESTA is bringing your own vision to life.
The collar, the front fastening, the pockets, the details at the back and the sweep of the silhouette all contribute to its character. If you would like to introduce a more elegant, classical touch, these preferences can be reflected in the tailoring.
VESTA offers an extensive range of patterns, allowing us to propose designs suited to both your preferences and your physique.
You might take inspiration from the collar of a coat you admire, adjust the length to complement your height and choose a softer fabric. A photograph becomes a starting point for creating something that fits naturally into your own life.
Searching from shop to shop and trying on coat after coat takes time and effort. Perhaps you have found a shape you love in the wrong fabric, or a beautiful cloth in a coat that is not quite the right length.
You might explore your ideal coat through a conversation with AI, then find a design online that captures what you have in mind. With VESTA’s exceptionally broad selection of models, a photograph or screenshot can become the starting point for your own coat.
Cashmere, Tweed and Wool | How Fabric Changes a Coat’s Character
Even with the same design, the choice of fabric changes how a coat looks and feels.
- Cashmere: For those who appreciate a soft touch and a subtle lustre. Its supple drape can bring an especially graceful quality to the silhouette.
- Tweed: For those drawn to texture, pattern and traditional character. It adds depth and interest to everyday dressing.
- Wool: A versatile choice for everything from commuting to dining out, with a wide range of weights, weaves and finishes.
Cashmere and wool are fibres, while tweed is a type of woven fabric. A wool tweed, for example, combines the qualities of its fibre with the character of its weave.
At VESTA, we consider not only the appearance you prefer, but also warmth, weight and how often you expect to wear the coat when helping you choose your cloth.
