見えない場所への投資が、スーツの価値を決める
35万円の高級スーツに起きたこと
先日、あるイタリア人経営者の方からスーツのご相談をいただきました。
購入からまだ2年ほど。価格は30万円台半ばという高級既製服です。
しかし前身頃を見ると、生地の一部が波打つように浮き上がり、まるでミミズ腫れのような状態になっていました。
これは「バブリング（剥離）」と呼ばれる現象です。
高級ブランドのスーツであっても起こり得る問題であり、一度発生すると完全な修復は不可能です。
値段の張るスーツですから、購入時には誰も想像しなかったであろうその状態を目の当たりにし、改めてスーツの本当の価値について考えさせられました。
なぜ高級スーツでも剥離するのか
原因は生地そのものではありません。
またブランドの知名度や価格帯とも直接関係はありません。
問題はスーツの内部構造にあります。
近年、多くの既製服やラグジュアリーブランドのスーツでは、「接着芯」と呼ばれる構造が採用されています。
これは表地と芯地を特殊な接着剤で貼り合わせる製法です。
製造コストを下げ、大量生産や軽量化には優れていますが、長年の着用やクリーニング、湿気や温度変化の影響を受けることで、接着部分が劣化し、生地が浮き上がることがあります。
これがバブリングの正体です。
そして残念ながら、発生してしまった剥離を新品同様に戻すことは不可能です。
スーツの芯地は建築でいう鉄筋、車でいうシャーシ
スーツを選ぶ際、多くの方は生地やブランド名に目を向けます。
それは当然のことです。
しかし本当に大切なのは、外から見えない内部構造です。
建築物であれば鉄筋。
自動車であればシャーシ。
どれほど美しい外観を持っていても、構造体が弱ければ長く使い続けることはできません。
スーツも同じです。
芯地は着心地を支え、美しいシルエットを生み出し、耐久性を左右する最も重要な部分です。
見えないからこそ、その価値が見落とされがちなのです。

What Happened to a $2,500 Luxury Suit?
Recently, an Italian business executive came to us seeking advice about one of his suits.
The garment was only about two years old and had originally cost the equivalent of more than ¥350,000 (approximately $2,500).
Yet the front panels had begun to develop visible ripples and raised areas, almost resembling welts beneath the fabric.
This phenomenon is known as bubbling, or delamination.
Even luxury suits from prestigious brands can suffer from this problem, and once it occurs, complete restoration is extremely difficult.
Seeing a relatively new high-end suit deteriorate in this way prompted us to reflect once again on what truly determines a suit’s value.
Why Do Even Expensive Suits Develop Bubbling?
The problem is not the cloth itself.
Nor is it directly related to the reputation of the brand or the price paid.
The real issue lies within the suit’s internal structure.
Many ready-to-wear garments, including those from luxury brands, are constructed using fused interlinings.
In this method, the outer cloth is bonded to an internal layer using adhesive.
While this technique offers efficiency, consistency, and lighter production costs, the adhesive can gradually deteriorate through wear, dry cleaning, humidity, and temperature changes.
As the bond weakens, the fabric begins to separate and ripple.
This is the true cause of bubbling.
Unfortunately, once delamination has occurred, returning the garment to its original condition is virtually impossible.
The Canvas Is the Suit’s Structural Framework
When selecting a suit, most people naturally focus on the fabric or the brand name.
Yet the most important element is often invisible.
In architecture, it would be the steel framework.
In automotive engineering, it would be the chassis.
A beautiful exterior means little if the underlying structure is compromised.
The same principle applies to tailoring.
The canvas provides shape, comfort, durability, and long-term performance.
Because it cannot be seen, its importance is often overlooked.

Why Does It Require 70% Handwork?
A full horsehair canvas cannot simply be attached and forgotten.
It must be carefully sculpted to complement the wearer’s physique, posture, and natural movement.
The chest must be shaped.
The shoulders must be balanced.
The garment must be built three-dimensionally from within.
For this reason, VESTA relies extensively on handwork rather than machine-only production.
The fact that approximately 70% of our tailoring process is performed by hand is not a matter of tradition for tradition’s sake.
It is a necessary investment in comfort, longevity, and architectural precision.
What Is True Investment Value?
An expensive suit is not necessarily a valuable suit.
The real question is where the investment has been made.
Has the investment gone into branding and marketing?
Or has it gone into the unseen structure that determines how the garment feels, performs, and ages?
The difference is not always visible on the day of purchase.
It becomes evident five or ten years later.
The suit we examined was undeniably expensive.
Yet because of its internal construction, it had begun to lose its original beauty after only two years.
A properly constructed full-canvas garment, by contrast, can maintain its shape and elegance for many years while continuing to adapt to its wearer.
