当時、エルメネジルド・ゼニア イタリア本社にお招きいただいた際、ファブリック・ディビジョンのマネージャーだった人物が、北川にこう語りました。

この人物の紹介で北川が訪ねたのが、
イタリアの名門芯材メーカー 〈Bertello（ベルテロ）社〉 でした。
■ 馬の尾毛が生んだ “しなり × 強さ × 美しさ”
ベルテロ社は元々、馬のたてがみ・尻尾（＝本バス／Horsehair） を使い、
電車や馬車の座席用シートを製造していた会社。
馬の尾毛は、ヴァイオリンの弓にも使われるほど
強靭で、しなやかで、戻る力が強い天然繊維。
その特性を生かし、ベルテロ社は

訪問した北川が衝撃を受けたのは、
ベルテロ社が使用していた 特殊な“おわん型ミシン” でした。
ミシン台そのものが「人体の丸み」を模しており、

※余談ですが、イタリアで〈モデリスタ〉を名乗るには難関試験に合格する必要があり、
合格者のみが名乗れる大変権威ある肩書きです。

その後北川は、ベルテロ社の紹介を受けながら

数年かけて縫製工場・テーラーだけでも30社以上 を訪問し、研究を重ねました。
そこで辿りついた答えは明確でした。
“芯を自社の型紙と仕立てたい理想のスーツに合わせて作らなければ、
イタリア的立体感は生まれない。”
