今日は、インバネスコートについて学びました。English post follows after Japanese.
インバネスコートの成り立ち
そもそもインバネスとは、スコットランドの北東の海岸沿いにある街の名前だそうです。
1850年ごろから現在の形に見られるような、コートにケープがついたデザインが生まれたようです。
インバネス地方では鹿狩りが盛んで、森の中を鹿を追って入っていく際に、木の小枝などから肩周りを守るため、また霧や小雨が多い地域でもあるので、雨よけとしてケープをつけたコートとなったとの一説があります。
インバネスコートを有名にしたのはあの人
サー・コナン・ドイルによる有名な探偵小説、「シャーロックホームズ」の主人公が来たことで、このインバネスコートは一気に知名度をあげたそうです。
確かに、ヴェスタでもシャーロックホームズファンの方がわざわざご遠方からオーダーしてくださることがあるそうです。

Today, I learned about the Inverness coat.
The Origin of the Inverness Coat
Firstly, Inverness is the name of a town located along the northeastern coast of Scotland.
Around 1850, the design of the coat with a cape as we see it today began to emerge.
In the Inverness region, deer hunting was popular, and when people would venture into the woods to pursue deer, they would wear a cape to protect their shoulders from small branches. Additionally, the region is known for frequent mist and light rain, so capes were also used as rain protection. This is one theory behind the development of the cape-style coat.
The Person Who Made the Inverness Coat Famous
The Inverness coat gained widespread recognition when it was worn by the main character in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective novel, “Sherlock Holmes.”

Cape Removed: Without the cape, it becomes a more stylish and active look!
