2026年のBBWAA晩餐会に登場した
大谷翔平選手のスーツについて、
多くのコメントをいただきました。
「ブラックですか？」
「ネイビーに見えます」
「濃紺では？」
前回の動画では、
アメリカの各種メディアが一様に
“Black suit” と報じていたことから、
私自身も「黒」として解説しました。
ただ、正直に申し上げると——
初見で私自身は、濃紺に見えた のも事実です。
そしてコメント欄に寄せられた
「紺では？」という声は、
非常に鋭い視点でした。
この“違和感”こそが、
フォーマルの世界の奥深さを物語っています。
この問いは、色当てクイズではない
では実際、
あのスーツは黒だったのか。
それとも濃紺だったのか。
この問いは、
単なる色当てクイズではありません。
そこには
フォーマルという装いの本質 が隠れています。
なぜ黒と濃紺は、ここまで見分けが難しいのか
まず前提として、
黒と濃紺は、暗い環境では非常に見分けが難しい色です。
理由は大きく3つあります。
1. 照明と環境
晩餐会は
夜・屋内・スポットライト
という条件が重なります。
この環境では、
色味そのものよりも
光の反射と陰影 が強調されます。
結果として、
濃紺は限りなく黒に近づいて見えるのです。
2. 映像と写真の特性
テレビ映像や報道写真は、
人間の目と同じ情報を
そのまま再現しているわけではありません。
カメラセンサーは暗色をまとめて処理しやすく、
特にネイビーやミッドナイトブルーは
「黒として認識されやすい色域」 に入ります。
3. 人間の視覚
人の目もまた、
暗所では色相よりも「明暗」で判断します。
つまり
「黒に見えた」こと自体が、間違いではない
ということです。
ミッドナイトブルーという、フォーマルの答え
ここで重要なのが
ミッドナイトブルー（Midnight Blue） という色の存在です。
これは、
- 黒に最も近い濃紺
- 夜の色
- 威厳と静けさを併せ持つ色
として、
長い間フォーマルの世界で使われてきました。
太陽光の下では紺に見え、
夜のタングステン灯の下では
黒よりも深く、美しく見える。
実際、暗い場所では
「真っ黒」はわずかに赤みを帯びて
浮いて見えることがあります。
一方、濃紺は周囲に溶け込みながら、
着る人の輪郭と存在感だけを
静かに引き立てます。
そのため、
タキシードの世界では
黒よりもミッドナイトブルーが選ばれる
ことも珍しくありません。
私自身、この色が非常に好きで、

アメリカのメディアが

これらを考えれば、
「黒」と伝えることは決して間違いではありません。
一方で、
写真や静止画を見た人が
「濃紺に見える」と感じるのも、また事実です。
ここにこそ、

フォーマルにおいて大切なのは「色名」ではない
では結局、
黒か、濃紺か。
どちらが正解だったのでしょうか。
答えは明確です。
どちらでも良い。
そして、どちらも正しい。
フォーマルにおいて重要なのは
色名ではなく、
- 場に対して過不足がないか
- 主張しすぎていないか
- 周囲と調和しているか
という “機能” です。
大谷翔平選手の装いは、
この点において完璧でした。
だからこそ
黒と報じられても問題なく、
濃紺に見えても成立する。
それ自体が、
極めてフォーマルな装いだった証拠 なのです。

— Why It’s So Hard to Tell, and Why Either Answer Can Be “Correct”
Shohei Ohtani’s suit at the 2026 BBWAA Dinner has sparked a surprising number of thoughtful comments.
“Was it black?”
“It looks navy to me.”
“Could it be a deep midnight blue?”
In my previous video, I described the suit as black, largely because major American media outlets consistently referred to it as a “black suit.”
From a reporting standpoint, that interpretation was perfectly reasonable.
However, to be completely honest—
my own first impression was that it looked dark navy.
And the viewers who commented, “Isn’t it navy?” were making a very sharp observation.
That slight sense of uncertainty is not a mistake.
It is, in fact, a window into the depth of formalwear.
This Is Not a Guessing Game About Color
So what was it really?
Black—or midnight blue?
This question is not a simple exercise in identifying color.
Hidden within it is the essence of what formal dress truly is.
Why Black and Dark Navy Are So Difficult to Distinguish
First, a fundamental point:
black and deep navy are extremely difficult to tell apart in low-light environments.
There are three main reasons.
1. Lighting and Setting
Formal dinners are held at night, indoors, under spotlights.
In such conditions, subtle color differences matter less than
reflection, shadow, and depth.
As a result, dark navy naturally appears almost indistinguishable from black.
2. The Nature of Photography and Video
Television broadcasts and press photos do not reproduce color the way the human eye does.
Camera sensors tend to compress dark tones, and shades like navy or midnight blue often fall into a range that is
registered visually as black.
3. Human Vision
Our own eyes, especially in dim environments, rely more on brightness than hue.
In other words,
seeing the suit as black is not an error.
Midnight Blue: A Legitimate Formal Color
This brings us to the key concept:
Midnight Blue.
It is a color long recognized in formalwear as:
- The closest navy to black
- The color of night
- A tone that conveys dignity and calm authority
In fact, within the world of tuxedos, midnight blue has often been favored because it appears deeper and more elegant than pure black under evening lighting.
Under daylight, it reads as navy.
Under tungsten light at night, it can appear even darker than black.
Pure black, in contrast, can sometimes take on a faint reddish cast in low light, making it stand out awkwardly.
Midnight blue blends into its surroundings while subtly enhancing the wearer’s presence.
For this reason, it has long been accepted—and admired—as a formal color.
Personally, it is one of my favorite choices, and I often recommend it to clients as
one of the most elegant options in formal tailoring.
Why American Media Called It “Black”
American media referring to Ohtani’s suit as black was entirely logical.
- The impression on site
- The way it appeared under the lighting
- The acceptable range of color in a formal context
All of these factors support that description.
At the same time, those who viewed photographs or still images and felt it looked navy were also correct.
This overlap is precisely where
the boundary between black and dark navy dissolves in formalwear.
In Formalwear, the Name of the Color Matters Less Than Its Function
So which was correct—black or midnight blue?
The answer is clear.
Either is acceptable.
And both can be correct.
In formalwear, what matters is not the label of the color, but its function:
- Is it appropriate for the occasion?
- Does it avoid unnecessary assertion?
- Does it harmonize with the surroundings?
Shohei Ohtani’s outfit met all of these criteria perfectly.
That is why it worked whether described as black or perceived as dark navy.
That ambiguity itself is proof of a truly formal choice.
